Trump: N.K. leader called within 10 minutes after DMZ tweet

WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un called him "within 10 minutes" after he tweeted an invitation to meet at the inter-Korean border in June.
Trump was talking about his use of Twitter as a messaging platform when he cited the tweet he sent to Kim on June 29 right before he traveled to South Korea.
"When I was flying to South Korea, I had the idea: You know what? I'm going to South Korea, right next to North Korea, right where the border, right near there," he said in an interview with New Hampshire radio station WGIR.
"I said there was no way of anybody knows how to get Kim Jong-un ... I put out a tweet: Hey, I'm going to South Korea. If you want to meet for a couple of minutes, let's meet. And I put it out. And he was calling within 10 minutes.
"I mean, it's the craziest thing. So it's an incredible -- And we had a good meeting. It's an incredible way to communicate for me," Trump added.
The tweet that led to the June 30 meeting between Trump and Kim inside the Demilitarized Zone on the inter-Korean border read: "While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!"
The two met for about an hour and agreed to restart working-level talks on denuclearizing the regime.
Those talks have yet to take place as North Korea has protested this month's military exercises between South Korea and the U.S.
Since July 25, the regime has also conducted five rounds of short-range ballistic missile tests, but Trump has dismissed them all and insisted on continuing diplomacy with the regime.
"I look forward to seeing Kim Jong Un in the not too distant future!" he tweeted Saturday.

【서울=뉴시스】박주연 기자 = 한국자동차공학회가 16~18일새만금군산자동차경주장에서 'KSAE 대학생 자작자동차대회'를 개최한다.
16일 한국자동차공학회에 따르면 이번 대회는 ▲바하(Baja)부문(비포장도로 경기) ▲포뮬러 부문(포장도로 경기) ▲전기자동차(EV)부문으로 진행된다. 전국 102개 대학 195개팀 2600여명이 참가를 신청했다. 이번 대회는 누구나 무료로 참관할 수 있다.
가장 많은 팀이 참가하는 바하경기는 올해부터 웅덩이, 통나무 장애물, 높은 경사구간을 통과하며 차량의 내구성과 성능을 시험할 수 있는 동적성능평가가 신설됐다. 고성능 퍼포먼스의 포뮬러와 미래 자동차로 예측되는 EV부문은 최근 높은 관심과 함께 참가팀이 크게 늘어 대회 3일간 열띤 경기가 펼쳐질 예정이다.
내구레이싱에서는 무더운 날씨속 40km가 넘는 거리를 완주, 차량성능과 함께 기록해 우수팀을 가리게 된다.
대회 종합 우승팀에게는 산업통상자원부 장관상과 500만원의 상금이 제공되며 3500만원 상당의 상금 및 경품이 제공될 예정이다.
한국자동차공학회는 대학생들에게 자동차를 직접 설계 및 제작기술 습득의 기회를 제공하고 미래 자동차산업의 전문가로 양성하고자 2007년부터 대학생 자작자동차대회를 개최하고 있다.
